Our Vestry
Our Vestry
The Vestry is a group of elected representatives of the parish who govern in all matters pertaining to its corporate property. The number of vestry members and the term of office varies from parish to parish. Vestry members are usually elected at the annual parish meeting. The presiding officer of the vestry is the Rector or Priest in Charge. There are usually two Wardens. The Senior Warden leads the parish between Rectors and is a support person for the Rector. The Junior Warden often has responsibility for church property and buildings. A Treasurer and a Secretary or Register of the Vestry may be chosen by its members. These officers may or may not be Vestry members. The basic responsibilities of the Vestry are to help define and articulate the mission of the congregation; to support the church’s mission by word and deed, to select the Rector, to ensure effective organization and planning, and to manage resources and finances. The work of the Vestry is guided by the Diocese of Virginia and The Episcopal Church.
At St. Paul’s on the Hill, the Vestry members serve three year terms, with their Class being the last year of their three year term. Each Vestry member takes responsibility for one or more ministries of the church, and is ready to lend guidance and support to members of St. Paul’s who are called to be engaged in any of these ministries or related activities.
